Dia, a small, uninhabited island north of Crete, is steeped in legend as Zeus's creation. It features a church dedicated to the Ascension and is flanked by two small islands, Paximadi and Petalidi, to its north. Its southern coast boasts four sheltered bays: Agios Georgios (with the island's sole harbor and beach), Kaparis, Panagias, and Agrielia. To the east lies Anginaras Bay. Dia is a Natura 2000 site and a controlled hunting area, recognized for its rich biodiversity. It's home to protected species like the snail Albinaria retusa, the lizard Podarcis erhardii schiebeli, wild rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus), the "Mavropetritis" falcon (Falco eleonorae), the well-known kri-kri goat, and the chasmophyte plant Carlina diae.

Plaka is a picturesque village located 16 km north of Agios Nikolaos, directly across from the Elounda lagoon, in one of Crete's most scenic spots. Its defining feature is the magnificent view of Kalydon island, home to the historic Spinalonga fortress, which famously served as a leper colony until the mid-20th century. Plaka's existence is deeply intertwined with Spinalonga, as it was the primary point for transporting both supplies and patients to the island. Today, Plaka is renowned for its charming fish tavernas and beautiful traditional houses, creating a timeless atmosphere. It also boasts two picturesque beaches with large pebbles and crystal-clear waters: Agia Marina and Plaka beach itself, known for its coarser pebbles, calm waters, and shady tamarisk trees.
